Did You Know New Zealand Style?

So since I am currently residing in New Zealand I thought I would do a little research on some lesser known facts about the country and share a few I found interesting. So, did you know:

-New Zealand was the first country to give women the right to vote in 1893

-The lowest piece of currency in New Zealand is the 10 cent piece so prices are rounded up or down (for example, someone $8.03 will be $8 but $8.06 will be $9). I learned that the hard way my first day there when all the prices kept changing.

-The worlds steepest street is in Dunedin on the South Island

-The logo for the New Zealand National Air Force is the kiwi…a flightless bird

-New Zealand is the only country with the legal right to put Hobbit related material on its currency

-The only native land mammal to New Zealand are bats. All others were introduced species

-The longest place name in the world is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu, a hill in Hawkes Bay.

-NZ bans television commercials on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, ANZAC Day, and Christmas Day.

-There are more vending machines in Japan than there are people in New Zealand.

-Two NZ rescue dogs were taught to drive a car around a track, in order to prove the intelligence of shelter animals.

-The Māori name for NZ, Aoetaroa, means ‘land of the long white cloud’

So there you go. Now you know some things about New Zealand that most people probably don’t. I know a lot of them are new to me.
