Working with Wildlife

So this summer I had the privilege of doing a wildlife internship. It was long, hard days with rooms at capacity and tons of animals that needed cages cleaned, weights take, food prepared and given, medication administered and daily enrichment but it was amazing.

I spent my days working with raccoons, opossums, skunks, songbirds of all kinds, ducks, geese, swans, gulls, hawks, rabbits, snakes, turtles you name it.

Besides just helping with daily care I got to help with medical procedures like X-rays, surgery and blood draws, and just help in  the clinic administering shots, fluids and oral medications.

It  was such an amazing opportunity and I even though the days were long and I came home smelling like skunk more than a couple time I miss it.

Out of all the animals I got to work with, raccoons are my new favorites. They are adorable but just the way they use their hands, and how they love to stick everything in water is so precious. Plus they’re super friendly since most of them were raised by hand by us.
