If you know me you know I love Rainbow Rowell. She is hands down my favorite contemporary author. I just adore the way she writes. Now I’ve never read one of her adult novels before but I really enjoyed it. It didn’t quite have that major crisis build up and coming of age drama but it was still great.
The major reason I loved this book is because of the conversations between Beth and Jennifer. They talk just like me and my friends and I swear we are them in 5 years. They had me laughing out loud while I was reading this and I could not put it down.
That being said the reason this book lost half a star is because of the stalkerish premise. It’s cute and a little creepy at the same time and I just felt like the end didn’t quite work out cute enough. I didn’t love the way they came together at the end. I still loved the and thought it was hilarious but I felt like it had to lose some pints there.
I will say I enjoyed Beth and Jennifer’s chapters way more than Lincolns. At the beginning Lincoln is so sad. He hates his job, doesn’t have a lot of friends, is still pining over his ex and lives at home. But once he starts getting his act together and enjoying life his chapters get way more enjoyable.
Like I said I really enjoyed this book, despite the slightly stalkerish vibe at times. I mean is it weird how they “meet”? Yes. But it will be a good story to tell their kids one day. But it’s the writing style that made me love this book. I don’t think there’s anything Rainbow Rowell could write that I wouldn’t love. I just ordered Landline so hopefully I can finish off her published works and she’ll have something new for us soon!
Thanks for Reading!

January Shelfie

So this month I read *drum roll please* 5 books!!!

I’m so proud of myself since I finished 0 in December. I was in such a reading slump and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy really got me out of it!

Favorite Book This Month | Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy by Cassandra Clare

I loved this book and I’m so glad I finally picked it up. I wanted to read it before I read Lady Midnight but for some reason I just kept ignoring it and putting it off. I caved and got it at Target and it was amazing. I devoured this book in less than 24 hours and it made me fall back in love with Cassandra Clare. It made me remember how much I love her all over again.

Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire, and now he is becoming a Shadowhunter. But the events of City of Heavenly Fireleft him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is anymore. He knows he was friends with Clary, and that he convinced the total goddess Isabelle Lightwood to go out with him…but he doesn’t know how. And when Clary and Isabelle look at him, expecting him to be a man he doesn’t remember…Simon can’t take it.

So when the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon-hunting, determined to find himself again. His new self. Whomever this new Simon might be.

Do you ever forget how much you love something? And then go back to it one day and get to rediscover how amazing it is? Well that was this book for me. I have had Lady Midnight for the LONGEST time and have heard such amazing things about it but I’d heard that I could not read that before I read this collection of novellas. And for some reason that just wasn’t appealing to me.

But I saw it at Target the other day and bought it on a whim. And finished this 655 page whopper in less than 24 hours. This book reminded me why I love Cassandra Clare so much. Now if you haven’t read the mortal instruments…go away. Major spoilers ahead. This book bridges the gap between the Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices and Lady Midnight. So if you haven’t read the other 2 series, you won’t get it.

Now this book is all about Simon. And of course at the end of CoHF he lost his memory to save everyone. But he remembers some things and it’s so heartbreaking seeing him interact with his friends and not really remember them. But what makes this book great is Simon Lewis. I have always loved Simon as a character. He is the hilarious comic relief character, always coming up with witty retorts and nerdy references in the face of death. And he has not lost that ability. I was laughing out loud and smiling like crazy at the pages of this book. There were so many moments where you couldn’t help but laugh.

We also got to see a lot of favorite characters. Yes Jace, Clary, Isabelle, Alec and Magnus were all there. But also Jem and Tessa. And then there were so many great stories within the story. Tessa telling a story about her and Will fighting Jack the Ripper, Will and Tessa’s son at school and Robert Lightwood giving us a glimpse of the Circle while they were at the academy. It was nice to hear about old favorites.

What I also loved about this book was how much it made me think. At the end of CoHF there’s the whole big “cold peace” with the faeries and it really is a problem in this book. We see the Blackthorn children and all the pain that it’s caused their family. We see poor Mark Blackthorn who was basically left to rot in fairy by his own people and then he saves Simon and Isabelle anyway. The politics at the school of the “elite” looking down on the “dregs” but Simon being a catalyst for change. We really see in this book that Shadowhutners can be racist and this new generation is going to be the first big chance for change. I’ll be interested to see how Downworlder and Clave relations are changing in Lady Midnight and how the fairy situation escalates.

My favorite favorite story in this whole book was the one with the baby. I mean come on! It was so precious. First of all, Magnus is a fabulous narrator. But then just seeing the Lightwoods offer their name and their love to a warlock child was so magical. Because obviously we don’t have the highest opinions of Mr and Mrs Lightwood. But seeing them accept this child as a part of their family and offer up what is maybe now the most sacred name in their family was so touching. And then just the idea of Alec and Magnus having a little blue baby is so sweet. When they named him Max I wanted to melt.

This whole book blew me away and I devoured every page. Of course the end was incredibly sad. After everything we lost poor George. But the end, him being with Jessamine’s ghost was so special and then Simon taking the name Lovelace.

I think this was every bit the book Simon deserved. He is looking to find himself this entire book but he’s still so true to the Simon we know and love from TMI. But he does mature in this book and we really see him find his principles and stand up for what he believes.

I absolutely give this book 5/5 stars. It’s been so long since I’ve had a new Cassandra Clare book and I forgot how special they were to me and why (Sarah J Maas may have overshadowed it a bit…) I know some people think Cassandra Clare is just doing too many spinoffs and books but this is one I am so glad I’ve read and I honestly believe that the story of this world and these characters isn’t finished yet. There is a lot that still needs to change in the Shadowhunter world and I’m excited that we’re going to get to see it.

Thanks for Reading

First Blog Birthday!

So today I was just really feeling a blog post and I guess it was fate because I logged on to a message that it’s my blogs birthday!!!!

f114143fe1948384d373c2c92f12d686.jpg

I started this blog 1 year ago on the other side of the world. I started this in New Zealand while I was studying abroad because I just felt like I needed to share some of the amazing experiences I was having and all the amazing things I was seeing.

But while I was in New Zealand I realized that I wouldn’t be here forever but I wanted to continue to blog. And what else would I blog about but books!?

Although I still haven’t found a good balance of blogging and real life I really do enjoy being a part of the book blog community. It is so fun and even though there are times when I just don’t have the time for it I do love it.

So thank you everyone who has made joining this community so fun and I look forward to being a part of it for another year!!!

Top 5 Books of 2016

1. A Court of Mist and Fury | Sarah J Maas

26073150This should come as no surprise. I have raved over this book since the day it came out. It is not only my favorite book of the year but it is my favorite book ever so far and obviously comes from my favorite author. This book was not was I was expecting after ACOTAR at all and that is fine. I have been obsessing over the characters in this book since the day I finished it and I have been waiting for ACOWAR to come out since the day I finished it.

2. Crooked Kingdom | Leigh Bardugo

22299763-2This book was everything I wanted it to be, even the heart breaking ending. It is no secret that I did not enjoy the Grisha trilogy. I loved how it started but then everything went downhill from there. But the Six of Crows duology is from the same author but one of my favorite series. I love the characters and the way the interact but I also love the heist nature of the story and how everything is always moving so fast and is so exciting.

3.  Fangirl | Rainbow Rowell

fangirl-rainbow-rowell-cover-677x1024If Sarah J Maas is my favorite fantasy author, Rainbow Rowell is my favorite contemporary author. It’s hard to compare then because they write such different types of books and Fangirl is so amazing. If you are even remotely a fangirl for anything then you can relate to the character in this book. But even if you don’t have things in common with her characters I find them so easy to read. Even though their lives have hardships it’s in such a real way and it makes the story so moving.

4. Empire of Storms | Sarah J Maas

28260587Now I know what you might be thinking, why isn’t this higher up? And it’s not that I didn’t love Empire of Storms. But I loved every book on this list. These were all 5 star books for me this year. Now the reason I put this as 4 is only because it wasn’t my favorite Throne of Glass book. Again, it was great. The scenes with Elide and Lorcan were gold and Manon and Dorian was amazing. Even the little bromance blooming between Dorian and Rowan was heart melting and then of course Aelin was perfect as always. I loved this book but Heir of Fire is still my favorite and Queen of Shadows after that.

5. Eleanor and Park | Rainbow Rowell

15745753Ah Eleanor and Park. Again this is another 5 star read so it being last on this list doesn’t mean anything. I loved this book. Now this is the one I was really referring to when I said above “even if you don’t have things in common with her characters I find them so easy to read”. For me Cath is super relatable but that doesn’t mean I don’t love Eleanor and Park. Even though Eleanor is in a horrible situation there is just so much lightness in the way Rowell writes that makes it so heartbreaking but enjoyable to read at the same time. I love how she writes dialogue between her characters and even though this book has a lot of really crushing topics in it, I enjoyed every second of it.

Fall Wrap Up & Winter Expectations

October 2016: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Lets get this over with

So enthusiastic (but like i feel the same it’s fine)

This is a long time coming so it feel like more of a burden at this point

Whose fault is that #FinishedTheBookNovember5th

At least I finished it @emily

Why are we doing this if it hasn’t finished the book?

Because at this point she’s never going to finish it. And it’s November 26 so she’s run out of time.

She’s still doing her lab report and doesn’t look to be coming into this doc any time soon. JK she’s coming but she’s not happy

I will finish eventually I’ve just been super busy lately between working for my Etsy shop, school, and Skyrim Remastered.

*rolls eyes*

Discussion Questions:

1. What was your favorite thing about the book?

Ok lets start shall we.

Okay so tbh my favorite thing is how this fantasy world has reversed gender roles and the women rule everything but like of course that’s my favorite thing.

How did I know you were going to say that *rolling eyes*

Okay whatever you have to admit it’s nice to have an alternate perspective to point out a real world problem in the reverse, AND another feminist themed fantasy novel a la ACOMAF

Well, my favorite thing was probably that it was nothing like I was expecting. Reading the description I figured poisoners was the lamest gift and upon opening you find out they’re the ones who have controlled the government for a while.

I like that people have really cool powers on different parts of the island, with some being able to control animals, others having poison immunity, and elemental control. It was really interesting to see how their powers contributed to a kind of “speciest” perspective.

2. What was your least favorite thing about this book?

My least favorite thing about this book was the priestesses. I hate them. Cutting peoples hands of #notcool

I consistently say I don’t read books for the romance plots but like I’m lying it’s fine, so my least favorite thing was there was nothing slow burn to destroy my heart.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. No slow burn LOL of course. I was unimpressed with the romance we got. Kat and Pietyr (spelling?) was nothing special to me.

God that fucking coupling reminded me of Sansa Stark and Littlefinger. NO THANKS.

Yea that whole relationship was creepily twisted.

Also wtf is with him throwing her into a ditch at the end…???

Moon Door AF.

I know this is kind of bad, because it’s kind of against the plotline but I didn’t like the whole insertion of the “dark magic” that Arsinoe gets into.

Oh same. As soon as thing “low magic thing” started I was unhappy about it.

Yeah idk what that was all about but maybe she’ll shy away from that once she learns to use her actual power… Emily I can’t help but spoil you since you haven’t finished but since Arsinoe is a poisoner that’ll probably be more important to future plot. ALSO I GUESSED THAT FROM PAGE LIKE 2.

Oh I know I read the ending. Plus her name is Arsinoe (like Arsenic).

Because she sucks and reads like a shit.

3. Favorite character

Mirabella is mine. I’m calling her. She loves her sisters so much and I can’t get over it. It breaks my heart.

Nope sorry. Mirabella is mine. Fire powers….? That belongs to me.

No. Stop. Let me make an argument right now. You are Arsinoe because of this line:

“Arsinoe struggles out of Mirabella’s arms. That too is like the sister she remembers. Always a wild thing, not made for cuddling.”

Done.

Nope sorry. Called her.

Stop I literally have 400 other reasons you are Arsinoe. She’s the sarcastic one. I bookmarked like 12 pages where she says sarcastic shit because I knew we were going to have this argument. Also, she was raised as a naturalist and is the ~animal~ one. Mirabella is like the protective mom one and that’s me AF.

But she’s not the animal one. She’s a poisoners *plot twist*

But she’s still outdoorsy and loves animals because she was raised by them.

I don’t know who my favorite is. Arsinoe made me angry cause of that whole dark magic thing. I guess I really felt bad for Kathryn.

See but Kathryn is the only one on board with murdering her sisters.

Ya’ll it’s KATHARINE

But can you blame her? She has been constantly poisoned her entire life for the sole purpose. She doesn’t know anything else and she has so much room for growth.

I like Katharine. She reminds me of Sansa as I said before. She has to learn the game and her mind is poisoned (hehe) by the politics of Fennbirn, and I think she will overcome that and become a major player but at the same time not cruel like the poisoners who raised her.

Ya too bad she got thrown down a cliff at the end. So does that mean she’s a naturalist? Is that why her snake never bit her. Why she didn’t have to drug it.

She is 100% naturalist. Her snake. Doesn’t bite her and she trained it and now that she has a new one I think it’s gonna cause problems. Sweetheart was her familiar.

That is what I’m thinking. Maybe she will have a large animal come to her from across the ocean like they were talking about earlier for Arsinoe because her other sisters are so powerful.

She also loved her horse.

4. What do you rate it?

Ok moving on. Rating. I gave it 4 stars.

I haven’t rated it because I still haven’t finished, and I strongly disagree with people who rate books without finishing (or even reading) it.

I think I gave it 4.25? I am holding tight to my appreciation for its feminist themes and I really liked the queens as characters. They were complex and I’m excited to see what decisions they make and if they ally together or kill each other or whatever.

Yes you did. I thought it was a really fresh and interesting concept. And there were parts where it got slow for me but for the majority of it I was pretty intrigued by the story. I hope they don’t kill each other. I want them all to be queens in the end. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t want any of them to die because at some level I do feel attached to all of them.

Same! Co-queens are always a plus. I also HIGHLY NEED THEM ALL TO BE ALLIES AND FUCK UP THAT SYSTEM OF KILLING EACH OTHER. Like they are the three sisters who could overcome that system.

Plus wouldn’t that just make the island stronger? To have 3 queens with 3 different powers.Well I mean Mirabella seems least likely to kill her sisters, although now who knows.

5. What did you think of the plot?

I generally like the plot. Again, didn’t really care for the whole “dark magic” spin-off which kind of made me dread switching back to Arsinoe point of view, because she is slowly messing up her own life.

Ya honestly I thought Arsinoe’s chapters were the most interesting when we followed Jules.

The plot was a divergence from anything that I expected. I really thought it would heavily rely on Mirabella vs. Katharine but Arsinoe’s storyline was so much more that I expected. I also really liked that they focused mostly on their separate lives and character development in this first book because it got me more attached to the queens. The whole competition thing was like the last few chapters and that’s it.

I figured from the description they would all be living in a castle and when it started they would spend the entire book trying to kill each other, which was not the case. I liked how character driven the story was. I also really thought “poisoners” would be the obvious “weak gift” but they have all the power.

6. Final thoughts?

I will eventually finish the book, because I really enjoy it, and I will definitely be reading the next book in the series to see where it takes us.

I’ll read the next one. I also thought this book was going to be a stand alone but I’m excited that there’s more.

I really want a plotline to involve Mirabella and Arsinoe teaming up to like save Katharine from herself and like SISTER POWER. Idk why I just need it.

I’m also excited for Katherine to realize she’s a naturalist. Or how Arsione will reveal she’s a poisoner.

Couldn’t she also have that “war power” that they were talking about? I would rather he be a naturalist though.

Oh yeah that’s also possible. But I really think Sweetheart is her familiar.

Sweetheart is dead.

That would also be a lame familiar and I feel like she would match the power of her sisters.

I know Sweetheart is dead and I don’t think a poisonous viper is a lame familiar. But there will be ramifications of them replacing her snake with a fake.

Ya but she had the snake on at the quickening ceremony and was fine.

I mean naturalists can control all animals to an extent right? Especially if they’re super powerful? Like Jules can control that bear.

Kinda

OH ALSO: WTF JOSEPH????

Don’t get me started on the fuckboy.

Like they waited for each other and he sleeps with mirabella ONE TIME and all of a sudden Jules is not good enough???

Like I get it was supposed to be part of the ~dark magic~ that Arsinoe did but still, another reason not to like that plotline.

Probably. But still. The fact that he’s still “torn” between the two of them and then has the audacity to even speak to her at the end.

He can go home. The patriarchy on the mainland did something to him clearly. Bye, Jules deserves better and so does Mirabella.

Are we done

Ya I’d say so.

Ok now you have 5 days to finish And I Darken.

Book Review: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

So first of all, I’m sure you’re thinking “wasn’t this your October book? It’s November 25th?” And you’re right, this is LONG overdue. But this month was crazy. I was so busy with school that I just did not have time to read.

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

Now, this book was nothing like I was expecting. After reading the description online I was expecting the 3 sisters to be living together and thinking this book would have a hunger games princess feel. I also thought that as far as powers went “poisoner” sounded the lamest. So imagine my surprise when I open the book and find out that the poisoners have been in power for a long time.

The entire set up of this island was very interesting. Women are in control and the island is a completely separate culture from the mainland. Also the fact that the queen always has triplets, they’re always born under these categories of power and then the queen leaves after they’re born.

We start the book with the poisoners and we discover Kat is a very weak poisoners. But the poisoners have all the power so she’s faking her way thought. I liked Kat, but she was probably my least favorite of the 3. Mostly because she seemed the most eager to kill her sisters.

Mirabella was probably my favorite of the three sisters but I felt the worst for her because I was NOT a fan of the priestesses. Mirabella didn’t want to kill her sisters and remembered when they were still friends and promised to protect them. My heart broke for her and I was really happy when she left the temple. I was less excited when she got dragged back. I really thought her getting away from them was going to be where the story picked up but she got taken back pretty quick and then of course what happened with Elizabeth’s hand really disturbed me. I don’t do mutilation. I actually put the book down for a while after that.

Arsinoe’s chapters were probably the most interesting but mostly because we had Jules. Arsinoe has zero naturalist power from the get go even though her friend Jules is the most powerful naturalist in a long time. I did not approve of her using low magic although I felt bad for her when she got mauled by the bear and when she had her second failed escape attempt. I also really felt bad for Jules because she did nothing to deserve Joseph betraying her for Mirabella. But I was so glad that Mirabella protected Arsinoe when the priestesses were going to kill her and I wish she would see that Mirabella was protecting her and not trying to kill her.

Now of course the big reveal at the end which makes everything make sense was that Arsinoe is ACTUALLY the poisoner. You wonder if the last queen made a mistake or did it on purpose because she didn’t want the poisoners in power any more? Either way it leaves a lot of questions on what will happen in the next book. I actually picked this up thinking it would be a oneshot but it seems that’s not the case. And of course now I’ve become attached to the sisters enough that I don’t want any of them to die.

Nessian Updates

So I feel like this has become a little series on my blog since the lovely Jess @ starswholisten writes so much fabulous Nessian Fic just for me. But really these posts are for my inner SJM fangirl. I’ve done a few others about fan fiction, as well as some amazing fan art which you can see here:

When Fan Art is Life Changing

When Fan Art is Life Changing Part 2

So you can see, I have a tendency to get excited about these things. AND NOW THERE’S MORE!!!

bbtn8gzipa35gttbg5aj

New Fics:

So recently I pitched a new idea for a Cassian narrated theme of certain scenes from ACOMAF and so far we have the first one and it’s amazing!!! You can check it out here and if you’re a Cassian lover then I think this is for you. It’s called “You Might Be One of Us”.

Then we have a new Nessian AU which is amazing because Nesta is a veterinarian!!! (Incase you do not know I am currently in the midst of applying to vet school and I am Jess’s muse for Nesta so this is basically a fic about me in my eyes). So even thought it probably holds less personal feels for you, it is amazing because the idea of Nesta being the kind of person who loves animals more than people is great. You can check that out here and it’s called “Dirty Paws”.

Fan Art:

And then finally Coralie Jubénot has some new art for us and guess who it is!?!?! It’s CASSIAN!!! AND HE’S SHIRTLESS!!!! Now I didn’t love her first cassian drawing, but I think it was more just the outfit because this one is AMAZING (although I still secretly imagine him with a little facial hair). But look at this? Is it not gorgeous? Does it not make you want to melt? Because it makes me so weak in the knees and I may have to order this on a coffee mug because that would for sure get me out of bed in the morning.

Anyways, thanks for putting up with my fangirl. I’d probably go insane if I couldn’t talk to people about this borderline unhealthy obsession with these fictional beauties but what are blogs for?

Thanks for Reading
