Top 5 Literary Mothers

So today is my Mom’s birthday, so in honor of that today I’m listing my top 5 literary mothers! Now in YA I feel like the mothers are often background characters we don’t see much of so this was not an easy list to come up with.

19063-2Rosa Hubermann | The Book Thief

Now Rosa is not Liesel’s real mother. She’s her foster mother and at first she doesn’t seem to care for Liesel all that much and appears very strict. But I have a distinct memory of sobbing over the book at 1 in the morning. It was reading the scene where Liesel admits that she spent some of Rosa’s money to send a letter to her real mother and she realizes her mother will never write back and she would never see her again. And then Rosa apologizes and Liesel says “she leaked a little” meaning Rosa is crying and that scene broke me.

15745753Mindy Sheridan | Eleanor and Park

I love Park’s mom in Eleanor and Park. She is so welcoming to Eleanor and even though it seems she may not like her at first, when she realizes that Eleanor comes from a big family and has a lot of responsibility she really comes to understand her and is so sweet in trying to make Eleanor always feel welcome.

harry_potter_and_the_goblet_of_fire_us_coverMolly Weasley | Harry Potter

Now disclaimer: I have not read all the Harry Potter books. BUT I have read 1-4 and the beginning of 5 and Mrs. Weasley is one of my favorite characters. In the movies she’s not shown as much but one of my favorite scenes thus far in the books is at the end of the fourth book when she is there to comfort Harry when he needs a mother most. She is so sweet to him and even though she has so many of her own children to look after, she is nothing but sweet to Harry.

21473404Sally Jackson | Percy Jackson

How can you not love Sally Jackson? She does so much to protect Percy and sacrifices her own happiness to do it. But even though she’s doing all she can to keep him safe, she still goes out of her way to make him happy. I love the mention of how she makes as much blue food as possible just because Gabe once said there wasn’t blue food and how the blue food carried on throughout the entire series and spinoff.

the_fault_in_our_stars

Frannie Lancaster | The Fault in our Stars

Although a bit of a background character for a lot of the book Frannie Lancaster is a great mother. I can hardly imagine what it is like to watch your child suffer like that but I love all that she does for Hazel. She is so encouraging and positive throughout the book. Plus I love that at the end she reveals she’s been taking classes to become a social worker to help others through experiences similar to her own which just shows what an amazing woman she is.

Who are your favorite book moms?

Thanks for Reading

BFF Book Tag

So I was tagged by Jess @ StarsWhoListen to do this tag and of course she is my actual real life BFF so I’m not surprised, so this is the BFF Book Tag:

Setting the Example: A pair/ group of book BFFs that you love | Ruby, Liam, Chubs & Zu

Screen Shot 2016-09-22 at 6.27.25 PM.pngHow could you not want to a part of their little family in the Darkest Minds? Not only are they the kind of friends you consider family, but they just have so many jokes and witty banter that keeps them all simile even though they’re in a horrible situation.

Childhood Bestie: Book character you would have liked to grow up with | Percy Jackson

27c36927e150c50f27f4f51c62d219ffHow could you not want to grow up with Percy? Sure his home life with his stepdad was not ideal, but imagine going on quests and saving the world with him and just getting to be at Camp Halfblood. Plus I appreciate the fact that he is the sassiest demigod out there and know we would get along great.

Frenemy: Which book character would bring out your competitive side | Manon Blackbeak

77426f8a63373dc597d89b9c9e339ac7.jpg

Now don’t get me wrong I love Manon but you have to admit she is the perfect frenemy. And sometime you just need that friend who is going to taunt you until you finally take action and I feel like Manon would not be shy about brining out my competitive side.

Fashion Guru: Who would be the bestie whose closet you’d want to raid or go on a shopping spree with | Isabelle Lightwood

isabelle-lightwood-shadowhunters-the-mortal-instruments-cassandra-clare-favim-com-4171901How can you not love Isabelle Lightwood from the Mortal Instruments Series? Not only is she a strong kick ass female but she also always looks good. She does not care what anyone else thinks of her outfits and the girl’s got style so I’d love to have her help me with anything appearance related.

Bad Influence: Character you would commit a small act of rebellion with | Kaz Brekker

kaz_brekkerNot just Kaz but the whole Six of Crows crew would be ideal group to commit any crime with. I mean with how skilled they all are there’s a 99% we’d get away with it PLUS can you think of a more fun group of people to hang out with? Their dynamic is hilarious since none of them trust each other and all they do is bicker because they’re all secretly in love with each other.

Blood Brothers: Which character would you want to be your surrogate big brother/sister | Nesta Archeron

tumblr_odtooygRJg1uv3gwvo2_1280.png

Obviously Nesta from ACOMAF. I am borderline obsessed with her and all I want is a Nesta Cassian spin off series. Now as sisters,  we would fight like dogs and cats because we’re too similar but I know she would tell someone off for me in a heart beat and be a fierce protector if I needed it (even knee an immortal fae warrior in the balls if I needed her too)

Mother Hen: Which character would you want to be by your side when you’re having a bad day | Levi

e79a27ed8c17cf32b2c7ad3346740458

Sorry Jess but how can I not steal your answer. There is literally no character sweeter and more likely to cheer someone up than Levi from Fangirl. He is so unbelievably positive, plus he would bring me free coffee which would immediately make my day better.

The Counsellor: Which character would you go to for relationship advice or confide a secret to | Tessa Gray

the_infernal_devices__tessa_gray_by_caroline1233-d7u97k9.jpgI feel like Tessa from the Infernal Devices series would give great relationship advice. After all, she’s been around for a long time, plus had some tricky choices in her own relationships but it all ended up working out for her (thank you Cassandra Clare for happy endings). Plus she’s super smart so no matter what I think she’d be good at giving advice in general.

More than Friends: Who would be your book boyfriend/girlfriend | Cassian

195398adf9e3bc0e211f7a39ac973b25Ok so this question is hard, because in my mind I have A LOT of book boyfriends, BUT as ACOMAF is still first and foremost all I think about during the course of the day, my little baby bat Cassian would obviously be my BF since the “sarcastic asshole, who is super protective of his family” is my “type” (mostly the sarcastic asshole part *looking at you John Murphy*) Also there is a shockingly small amount of Cassian fan art so enjoy this beautiful man SJM pinned as “cassian”

Who do you tag | Anyone who wants to do this tag plus…

Megan @ bookslayerreads

Rachel @ LifeOfAFemaleBibliophile

Becca @ RebeccaReads

TheImmortalReaders

Emily @ EmiesNook  (since I know you were tagged but you haven’t done it yet)

Let me know what you think. Who are you book best friends?

Thanks for Reading!

Throne of Glass Book Tag

So obviously this is in honor of the release of Empire of Storms this week. I found this on polishedpageturners blog, so without further delay here is the Throne of Glass Book Tag!

Lysandra | A book with a cover change you loved

81PUjYDq2yL

Well this one is easy. Throne of Glass. I know not off to a great start picking Throne of Glass as the first book in the Throne of Glass book tag but lets face it, that first cover was rough. In fact, Goodreads kept suggesting ToG to me with the old cover and that combined with the terrible little blurb “2 men lover her, the whole land fears her, only she can save them all” just made it sound terrible but eventually I picked it up and the rest it history.

Abraxos | A book that’s better on the inside than it looks on the outside

256683City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I was looking for books to read after the Hunger Games wet my literary appetite in high school and google just kept recommending the Mortal Instruments. So I looked them up and between the cover and the blurb I thought it sounded awful (just goes to show the blurb is always a bad indication of how good a book is). Anyways, I love the series, and the spinoffs and the rest is history.

Erilea | A series with great world building

21473404.jpgThe Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan. Now bare with me a second since I know it takes place in New York and the continental US (which is not a world that needs to be built obviously) but the way Rick incorporates the Greek myths and Gods and stories into the US from Greek mythology is so amazing that it seems like he’s built this completely probable world of his own around one that already exists.

Rifthold | A book that combines genres

16101128

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. In my opinion this book is a mix of Alien Sci-Fi and Dystopian since we have a very much post apocalyptic world but the Alien component is also such a strong factor.

Damaris | A book based on/inspired by a myth or legend

9462795Starcrossed by Josephine Angellini was my first taste of Greek Mythology woven into modern day. Although I loved the Percy Jackson series, these books hold a special place in my heart since they take place on Nantucket and I am a Massachusetts native and I love reading about the names of places I’ve been.

Kaltain Rompier | A book with an unexpected twist

19288043-2.jpgGone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I read this at the recommendation of a friend who had said to me right before I started it “it’s obvious who did it from the first pages”. I thought she had spoiled me badly. So I spend the entire first half of the book (spoilers ahead) convinced that of course Nick did it. It’s so obvious. Boy was I surprised when Amy starts narrating and I realized my friend had tricked me.

Assassin’s Keep| A book with an unreliable narrator

10507293The Selection by Kiera Cass. Now America is not unreliable in that she’s shady, more in the sense that she always messes everything up. Don’t get me wrong I loved these books (especially the first 2) but the more we went on the worse she got at literally always doing the wrong thing until in the last book she literally almost ruined everything for no reason.

Astern Blackbeak | A book that’s got squad goals

23437156

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. How can you not love and want to be a part of the swaggering, rag tag team led by Kaz in this book? They’re all so different and yet go together so well you can’t not want to be a part of their squad.

Terrasen | A book that feels like home

113436.jpg

Surprise it’s not Harry Potter for me. No the first big fantasy book I ever really got sucked into was Eragon by Christopher Paolini . My dad read it to me in the 4th grade and I loved it and it started what ended up being a 4 year long obsession with dragons.

Aelin Ashryver Galathynius | A book with the power to destroy you

15745753

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell gives me all the feels. I loved that book so much even though it was full of heartbreak and it literally killed me reading it but it will forever be one of my favorites.

Manon Blackbeak | A book that intimidated you

9781435158108_p0_v1_s192x300

The Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I bought this last year and have slowly been progressing though it but it is a monster of a book and some of the Holmes stories can be a bit slow at times or are just filled with a few too many old english phrases that  I can’t follow what’s happening but I am determined to get through it.

Rowan Whitethorn | A book that makes you swoon

21532133

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. How can you not swoon over a giant, adorable, chivalrous red-headed Scotsman? I mean really? James Alexander Malcom McKenzie Fraser is irresistible.

Chaos Westfall | A book that challenged you to see things differently

26073150A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. No book tag would be complete without this making an appearance. But I was trying not to use any books twice and although I could put this almost anywhere (particularly books that make me swoon) I was really struggling to come up with something for this and it just hit me. This book had you looking at an entire first book in the series differently because it had you realizing signs of an unhealthy relationship and examine depression, abusive relationships, PTSD, feminism and a lot of other really important themes that dominate the       book even though it is fantasy, which is what makes it such an amazing book.

Fleetfoot | A book that you received as a gift

12476820

The Partials by Dan Wells was a birthday present from a good friend of mine and ended up being a very enjoyable series to read for a nice dystopian story.

Eye of Elena | a book you found right when you needed it

This isn’t exactly a book but I found  PolandBananasBooks on Youtube right when I needed it. She helped bring me out of my shell a bit for loving to read during my freshman year of college and I know I would not be as comfortable being bookworm I am today if I didn’t find her freshman year. Plus she’s the reason I’ve read so many of my favorite books (including ToG).

I will tag Emiesnook to do this tag next and anyone else who wants to do it. Good Luck!

Thanks for Reading

Maggie
